Greenopia Environment Achievement:
Franzia is a major wine label that many people are familiar with. The good news is that Franzia accounts for some of the largest impacts of the wine and is one of the few companies to do so. This is of course the unique box that the wine is stored in. The box is much more eco-friendly to produce (i.e. glass has a much higher production burden) and it is also more eco-friendly to ship. One other benefit of box wine is that it stays fresh much longer so you don’t have to waste any if unable to finish the entire bottle. Franzia has above average environmental reporting, but most of the information only pertains to the packaging and not to the wine itself.
The wine itself is where Franzia struggles. Franzia does not carry any of the environmental eco-labels that we think are valuable and thus there is little known about how its fruit is grown and it seems everything is traditionally grown. Thus we would like to see organic, biodynamic, or even naturally farmed grapes so we can see efforts are being made in the production side. We were unable to find any significant elements of green building design in any of Franzia’s facilities.
Although the grapes themselves may not be the greenest, Franzia wine has a much smaller environmental footprint than most of the wines on the market.
