Greenopia Environment Achievement:
Anyone who has visited Benziger Winery knows that they are very proud of the various environmental initiatives they have undertaken. We are happy to report that Benziger tied for the greenest vineyard out of the ones we studied. Benziger has a variety of green wines including ones that are organic, sustainably grown, and biodynamic. Some of these are more regulated and stringent than others, but all things considered, Benziger has a great selection of green wines. Benziger has incorporated some elements of green building design in its facilities including solar power, and its wines are bottled with natural cork which has the smallest life cycle impact of all wine stoppers. Lastly, Benziger has above average environmental reporting, although we wouldn’t mind seeing a little more transparency. Benziger has also recently made changes to its glass bottles, lightweighting them and adding some recycled content. Because of the magnitude of the impacts caused by the production and shipping of the bottle, we are glad to see Benziger address it seriously.
Benziger does a good job taking significant action across the board so there is really nothing to bitpick here. There are a few things it could do a bit stronger, it is still amongst the industry leaders in almost every impact category we tracked.
This year, Benziger ties for top honors in our wine guide. Benziger has addressed nearly every impact to make it arguably the greenest wine we came across in our study.
