Green With Pinot Envy? Greenopia Rates 25 Major Wine Brands
SANTA BARBARA, California (August 24, 2010) – Today Greenopia released comprehensive rating of 25 major wine labels in terms of sustainability. At the top of the list, receiving 4 leafs out of a possible 4, were Benziger Family Winery and French Rabbit. The next greenest was Alma Rosa, scoring 3 Greenopia leafs.
Environmentalists are often concerned with the tremendous amount of water and land needed to produce wine. Wine bottles also have a significant environmental impact associated with their production and transport, something only a few wineries have addressed. How does a green wine enthusiast know which wines are most eco friendly?
The study completed by Greenopia, and available for free on its website, strives to answer this question. The ratings were completed as part of Greenopia’s mission to educate consumers on issues pertaining to environmental impact and health on a purchasing level.
“The wine industry as a whole has made a strong effort in changing its growing practices,” said Doug Mazeffa, the Research Director of Greenopia. “Even many of the largest commercial wineries practice some general sustainable farming practices. But, Benziger and French Rabbit really stand out with the commitments they have made to be greener.”
Greenopia used a comprehensive set of criteria to determine the wine company ratings. Data was collected from the companies themselves pertaining to the growing practices, transportation, building logistics, and attributes of the wine packaging. Weights were set based off the relative life cycle impacts of each criterion during wine production.
“We were surprised to see so many wineries that hadn’t addressed the environmental impacts associated with their bottles. Glass bottles not only have a large production burden, but their heavy weight gives them a high transportation impact as well. We hope that wineries and consumers will mutually embrace greener containers for wine in spite of their perceptions about quality,” says Gay Browne, founder of Greenopia.
