Company Overview: Dell is one of the largest computer companies in the world and represents about $60 billion in annual revenue. Green Efforts: Dell is making an effort to be the greenest major computer company in the world. How is it doing? Based off our research and analysis, we would have to say very well. Dell not only has a large number of EPEAT certified products, but it takes the products’ life cycle into account during its production. Dell is seeking to improve its LEED score into its buildings and has made strides in making its buildings much more efficient. Its long term goal is to double the efficiency of its buildings. Dell gives buyers the option to offset the emissions from transporting its products and it utilizes SmartWay certified transportation fleets. Dell also has the best take-back program in the industry. It will recycle any of its products for free and will even accept other brands for a small fee. Dell also uses a large amount of green energy and purchases some offsets as well. Green Issues: While Dell has a solid array of products, it would be nice to see some devoted dark green products. By this, I mean something like the Aleutia Atom. Not only is this computer barely larger than a deck of playing cards, it uses about a quarter of the power of most computers. While this example uses a different OS and may not have the fastest specs, it does show that a computer can be made with a relatively small impact. Greenopia Verdict: Dell is the greenest major computer company we came across in our study. |
