Company Overview: Patagonia is an environmentally and socially responsible clothing manufacturer that operates 26 stores nationwide. Green Efforts: Patagonia is heralded as one of the greenest companies in the US. Not only are their products made with recycled and low-impact materials, but they have also greened their offices and distribution network. Patagonia has also gone as far as to provide life cycle analyses several of its products on its website. This is a great resource if you want to see the impacts in various stages of an item’s production. Completing such a detailed analysis is not trivial and Patagonia should be commended for its dedication to minimizing its impact on the environment. Patagonia also has the Common Threads recycling program to offer to take-back its clothing at the end of its life so the fibers can be recycled. Patagonia has LEED offices and publishes a booklet on its environmental performance. Green Issues: The only thing we would like to see from Patagonia is more local sourcing of its items. But, having said this, no major clothing company has been able to source materials even on a domestic scale, so this is something that would tremendously difficult to implement in any reasonable time frame. Greenopia Verdict: Patagonia, without a doubt, makes the greenest clothing on the market and has been a leader in the industry every step of the way. |
