The temperatures have cooled, and it’s time to set aside that summery pink lipstick. This year, fall makeup is all about rich, dark colors and metallics with a hint of sparkle. And get excited for bright reds and berry colors for lips!
But heed our warning – Fashion Week tells us to pick eyes OR lips. Apparently, if you highlight both at the same time, you will look less twilight makeup and more Twilight vampire. Cheeks and skin are to be kept sheer and natural, so we recommend lots of moisturizer and a simple, neutral powder.
Accordingly, we looked at the fall lips and eyes for three outstanding organic makeup lines: Josie Maran Cosmetics, Lavera, and NVEY Eco.
Let’s start with berry lips. Did you know that we can eat four to six pounds of lipstick throughout our lives? If you buy standard lipstick, you’re basically chowing down on artificial dyes, lanolin, sodium lauryl sulfates, colors derived from petroleum, and even carmine that comes from the shell of a female beetle.
Josie Maran Cosmetics offers a lush lipstick containing organic jojoba seed oil and coconut cream. When you try on this lipstick, you’ll be struck by one thought: wowzers, this lipstick is like water! Or silk! Or watery silk! It goes on light and hydrating and offers up a flattering color that hangs around.
This fall, Josie Maran sends up colors like Desirous, which is a rich, berry plum. And then there is one of the best glosses on the market: her Brilliant a Levres in “Joie De Vivre” is a sparkly, deep red that slides on your lips with a cotton candy kick-off.
Lavera Naturkosmetic lipsticks contain “abundant extracts of Organic Shea Butter, Jojoba and Almond Oil.” It is extremely hydrating – and the shades for fall are colorful. I sampled the peach and felt like I was rocking out a hip, light orange that would kill it on any red carpet.
NVEY Eco’s Organic Lip Lustre is a nice combination of hydration and color. Check out Flirt for some fall plumage. It doesn’t last long, so you’re going to want to keep it on hand to maintain the color.
This fall, eye shadow is all about dusk. We’re looking at earthy and forest colors in the eyes, with lots of dark greens and browns with shimmery gold and brown bases.
Lavera Naturkosmetik eye shadows contain all-natural hydrating vegan organic calendula and jojoba. The dual combination of sand and mocca is a good bet for shimmery earth tones for fall.
NVEY ECO eye shadows offer up organic chamomile and vitamins A, C, and E. And they also are in keeping with the fall trends with dark greens, silvers, deep purples and browns.
Josie Maran Cosmetics are non-toxic and do not contain parabens. Also, their fall line is extremely rich – Chianti offers up some of the richest bronze out of all the lines. Smoke and Maple also keep up the dusky trends.
Finally, how to apply it all? I had the opportunity to speak with Josie Maran about her fall line. She shared some tips for applying eye shadow, just for Greenopia readers!
Josie Maran: This fall is all about a neutral color palette. Create a natural smoky eye with my favorite earthy shades (for this look think: soft brown, not harsh black). Start by sweeping a muted, light brown shade all over the lid. I love the Maple shade in my line of eye shadows.
Then blend a darker, smokier brown into the crease for a dramatic effect. Try my Eye Shadow in Smoke, or my personal favorite Chianti—it’s a rich brownish plum, perfect for fall!
Smudge a brown eye liner along the lashes to get the smoky effect. Finish the look by with my brand new brown mascara. This new shade brightens the eye and is just as natural and paraben-free as the original formula!
