Despite your best attempts to keep your children’s skin safely protected during the summer, it’s likely that all the outdoor play, swimming and hiking have taken a toll on their sensitive skin. From mosquito bites to sunburn, outdoor fun means paying extra special attention to skin. If you or your children are suffering from itching and burns, try these easy to make, holistic remedies to soothe summer skin.

Remedies for Burn and Bites

Only bathe in lukewarm water as hot water can further dehydrate and irritate sensitive skin.

Add 1 cup of baking soda to lukewarm bath and submerge body for 15 minutes. Pat body dry and liberally moisturize with olive oil or coconut oil.

Generously apply apple cider vinegar to sunburned or bite using natural cotton balls. Let air dry. In addition, drink one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar diluted in one cup of water.

Combine one ½ cup of baking soda with enough cool water to make a wet paste. Apply wet paste to mosquito bites and let dry. When dry and flaking, rinse off and reapply pate as needed.

Mix one part calcium bentonite clay with three parts water until creamy. Apply clay to bites or burns and let dry. As clay dries to skin, wet hand and apply more water to skin to make creamy again. Continue process until irritation subsides. Rinse completely and repeat process as needed.

In addition to the homemade remedies to treat bites and burns, continue to stay proactive when it comes to keeping your skin healthy. Dress in lightweight cotton clothing, wear broad rimmed hats and avoid the sun between 10 am and 2 pm when it is strongest. Drink plenty of water, enjoy seasonal fruit like watermelon to promote good hydration and up your Omega 3 by eating salmon or taking extra fish oil to help reduce the potential inflammation caused by bites and burns.
