Dream no more! Soon, eco grab n’ go could be a reality in your neighborhood. Locali, a green convenience store, recently opened its flagship store in Los Angeles. And plans are in development for this franchise to go national. This fabulous new idea is the brain-child of husband and wife Greg Horos and Melissa Rosen. The couple wanted to provide a quick shopping option for people interested in sustainable living. They also wanted to support local food artisans. And now their eco-idea has resulted in a cool new store for the inhabitants in Hollywood, just off Beachwood Canyon.
At their recent launch, I spoke with store supervisor Emael. “Locali is about one-stop shopping,” Emael told me as we stood in a crowd of shoppers browsing the green goods. “It’s about giving people healthy, ready-made options for sustainable living that’s not so in your face.” Locali is dedicated to informing the public about green living, but in that subtle way. As in, you may already be green, but are you so green you knew that they made adorable matchstick garden seed packets? Further, owner Melissa informed me that Locali is all about living in harmony with the needs of the neighborhood. For instance, they didn’t put in an organic juice bar because, right now down the street, an organic juice bar already exists.
The store has the vibe of a 7-11 store made eco-cool. There are organic pretzels, agave slushies, sustainable hot dogs, and more. Goods include organic and sustainable farmed meat and produce, prepackaged and fresh meals from local food artisans, biodegradable to-go utensils, organic bath and beauty, and eco-friendly lifestyle and conversation products.
Or Melissa sums it up: “We’re a mom and pop general store that caters to wine lovers, beer aficionados, moms and dads looking for healthy snacks for the kids, vegan foodies, conscious carnivores, eco-minded individuals seeking a simple way to reduce electricity consumption, singles looking to meet another sexy someone in line for a tasty sandwich.” All this and sweet, sweet agave slushies. What greenie could ask for more?
