The temperature is dropping all around the northern hemisphere. And for many of us, that means that our lips are going to soon resemble something akin to a retro alligator handbag. But it’s time to fight back and reclaim your silky pout!
Think about it. It’s not like you can be expected to live with dry lips. Yeah sure, people do. Like the Amish and men. (I recently asked my boyfriend what kind of lip balm he uses, and he just stared at me, blank.) But for the rest of us, moisturized lips are a daily part of life.
And if you’re a green girl or boy, you are going to want to keep your lip balm natural. Unless you are a fan of petroleum. Chap Stick was invented by Dr. C. D. Fleet, who decided that petroleum jelly would be the best short-term fix for dry lips. But petroleum doesn’t absorb into the skin. Therefore, it keeps the skin from breathing and can therefore make your lips more chapped in the long run.
So how to keep your lips natural and organic? Check out our picks for great, natural lip treatments.
Our Best All Around: Organic Lip Treatment by EO Organics
This lip balm is simply outstanding. It tastes great, goes on light and silky, and leaves your lips hydrated for an extended period of time. This is my lip balm of choice – I actually just ran out this morning and am staring at the empty tube much as a dog might forlornly stare at a used up bone. It is made from certified organic cold-pressed safflower and sweet almond oil, beeswax, Vitamin E and more.
Natural Beeswax Lip Balm by J.R. Watkins
This has a strong peppermint taste and really hydrates in all good, silky smoothness. And one application lasts a long time. It is 100% all-natural (not organic) and contains premium beeswax, vitamin E and shea butter.
Natural Lip Protection SPF 15 by MoistStic
This lip protection is delightfully minty, light and tasty. It does an excellent job getting your lips hydrated, and it also has an SPF 15 to boot. It is not organic, but it does contain natural peppermint and tea tree oils.
Peppermint Vanilla Liplu
x SPF 15 by Coola
This light, peppermint-y balm goes on silky smooth, and one application lasts a long time. Since it has an SPF 15, it does have a slight, sun block aftertaste to it. But hey, you know it is working. (They also have an SPF 30 version for the serious sun worshippers.) It contains certified organic flavors, and it is paraben free.
Organic Root Beer Lip Balm by Bubble and Bee
This balm goes on smooth and yes, tastes exactly like root beer. Also, the moisture lasts – a few hours later, my lips were still fully hydrated. (And tasty!) It is made with organic beeswax, sunflower oil, and cocoa butter. The flavoring is Stevia-based and all organic.
SPF 8 Lip Moisturizer by Juice Beauty
This lip balm offers a fantastic, subtle touch of color, and is most likely to replace your lipstick. It provides a pretty hint of makeup that beats a lipstick any day. However, it feels a little drier than some of the other balms and drags on your lip a bit when you apply it. While it isn’t as silky as some, you do get a nice trade off for color. It contains certified organic oils and natural fruit essences.
