It’s almost turkey time, and that means one thing. We’re not talking about long awkward moments of forced intimacy spent in an enclosed space with your in-laws. We’re talking something that is much less likely to leave you with a sour stomach – leftovers! But how to store all the turkey/tofurkey/vegan quinoa loaf in the most eco-friendly way possible?
Luckily, we’ve come a long way since Tupperware. There are a lot of great options for green food storage. Have plastic wrap? Put it aside and consider using a plate to cover food in the refrigerator. You can also use biodegradable, unbleached wax bags to store cheeses and cold cuts.
Consider using glass or stainless steel storage containers. And if you do use plastic, avoids ones that are labeled #3 and #6. (Look for the number stamped on the bottom of the product.) These contain chemicals can disrupt hormones and leech into food. The number 6 plastics, or polystyrene, can release potentially toxic breakdown products like styrene. This happens when it is heated – you know, like when you put warm food into a container. Number 3 are PVCs, or plastics that may release toxic breakdown products like phthalates into food and drinks.
Recycled Plastic Containers
If you do decide to go for plastic, make sure it is recycled. These square containers from Preserve are made from 100% recycled #5 plastic and are 100% recyclable. They are BPA free and made in the USA.
Glass Containers
Glass is recyclable and obviously free of plastic chemicals. Glass also works well because they don’t stain or retain odors like plastic containers. There are also a lot of options out on the market. Pyrex is a top brand of glassware to consider.
And these round glass storage bowls from Greenfeet have lids are made with #4 plastic.

Stainless Steel Containers
Stainless steel is another great alternative to plastic containers. These containers from Grassroots come in three sizes and are constructed from high-quality sanitary grade #304 stainless steel. It has a container that will fit a child's backpack. Apparently, they are also lightweight and durable.

Green Lunch on the Go
Bring your leftovers to work or school! If you must use plastic, this compartmentalized storage container is made with non-leaching #5 polypropylene plastic and no phthalates. It comes with an ice pack and two smaller containers for your fruits and vegetables. The LunchBot Duo offers the same concept but in stainless steel. Also, the top of lid is powder coated orange with a non-VOC finish.
