I know how it is. You like the idea of green clothing, but the thought of wearing scratchy bamboo is about as appealing as the idea of putting it under your fingernails. But celebs have been going green since before Julia Roberts made like a wood nymph on the cover of Vanity Fair. And now the kinks have been worked out for the rest of us. So here’s the latest on the hottest green designers to hit the red carpet.
First, our respects must be paid to the Queen Bee of Green, Stella McCartney. Favored by Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, Maggie Gyllenhall and more, Mistress Stella supports more green charities that one can count. (Peta, Adventure Ecology, and Marine Connection, to name a few.) She was also honored in 2008 for being “the” Green Designer of the Year. If being connected to a music legend makes you this green and fabulous, then sign me up for guitar lessons today!
So Stella has couture covered. But what’s available for us plebes? Target has offered up this line from Loomstate. http://www.loomstate.org/about/ Designers Rogan Gregory and Scott Hahn present this “certified organic cotton (collections) using socially and environmentally responsible methods of production.” Mena Suvari recently debuted their hip, stylish wares on the red carpet.
Suzanne Juul is another designer to incorporate eco-friendly materials into her lines. Hayden Panettiere once rocked the designer’s bamboo-created dress on the red carpet. Also favored by stars like Queen Latifah, Marisa Tomei and Madonna, bamboo is known for its luxurious softness. And since it is a grass, it is much easier to produce than other fabrics.
Linda Loudermilk glams up green with her rock and eco-inspired sensibilities. Given the Luxury Eco-Stamp of Approval, the company keeps things earth-friendly with their manufacturing processes, energy uses, environmental impacts and more. They’ve also been given the stamp of approval from reporter Nancy O’Dell, who once sported a Linda Loudermilk design on the red carpet.
Preferred by stars like Jessica Alba, Karyn Craven’s line Burning Torch is committed to style and the environment. http://www.burningtorchinc.com/ Burning Torch’s debut collection back in 1999 was made completely from recycled vintage garments. The collections bring together modern, vintage, organic and global sentiments. Craven recently told InStyle, “We take discarded items and transform them into new, extremely beautiful and desirable objects.” And judging by the happy look on Ms. Alba’s notorious sour puss, mission accomplished!
And finally, for those times you want to just throw on a pair of jeans, put the Levis aside and check out a pair of jeans from Replay Organic. This Italian company uses pesticide-free organic cotton. Emmanuelle Chriqui has sported their skinny jeans. Be green down to your jeans with this hipster label.
