Honor Roll:
American University (AU) has relatively poor environmental reporting, although it has submitted its data to the ACUPCC. We are happy to report that its emissions are well above average. AU has around 30 buildings seeking some sort of LEED certification, but it does not yet require that all new buildings meet LEED standards. AU has a very good recycling rate of 43%. It also purchases RECs to offset 25% of its electricity generation, something done by very few schools. AU offers some local and organic food options for students and has several alternative fuel vehicles on campus.

Held After Class:
AU really needs to step up its reporting. It was very difficult to find information outside of the ACUPCC. We would also like to see the school add a LEED standard for new buildings given the fact that buildings are the primary driver of a campuses’ environmental impact. AU could also improve a bit on its green purchasing for green food options and alternative fuel vehicles.

Green Grade:
AU has some impressive aspects about its campus, but needs to improve some others.
