Air Canada Average Fleet Age: 11.6 Greenopia Environment Achievement:

Efforts: The average fleet age of Air Canada is around 11 years, which is slightly better than the average of the rest of the companies in our study. Air Canada has retrofitted many of its planes with winglets which help reduce emissions and the company also practices other environmental procedures such as engine washing, efficient landing approaches, and direct routing. Air Canada flights offer recycling services on board and the company also offers its customers the ability to mitigate the impact of their flight through the purchase of carbon offsets. Issues: Our biggest issue with Air Canada was it had the worst environmental reporting of any airline we studied. All we were able to find was an environment page with a few pages worth of text generally highlighting several initiatives. When almost every other airline publishes a 25-60 page report of what they are doing, such a simplistic offering does not really stack up. We were also unable to find any information that Air Canada has any LEED certified buildings under its ownership or if it is actively pursuing any alternative fuels. Finally, Air Canada does not seem to offer much in the way of green food options. Greenopia Verdict: Air Canada has several notable environmental positives, but we would really like to see much better reporting than what it offers presently. |
