Interviews
Anni Daulter
      by Stef McDonald
Anni Daulter was inspired to start Bohemian Baby, a Marina del Rey-based organic baby food company she runs with her husband, following the birth of their first child. At the time, Anni made all of their son's food from fresh organic ingredients —then she became determined to help other moms (and dads) feed their tots with fresh and pure food. It's available by delivery or at Whole Foods and other markets. Daulter talked to Greenopia about her work and living green in L.A.

Best part of your job?

It is feeding the babies. We’ve never had a baby who didn’t enjoy our foods.

What are some of your favorite local green businesses?

A friend of mine has a business called Green Built Consultants. They use all alternative materials and resource efficiencies to build homes.

What is your favorite local green restaurant?

Leaf restaurant. Their food is really good and I never have to worry about what I’m eating. I love the pizza.

Where do you shop for organic groceries?

Mostly the Co-Op in Santa Monica. They have the best produce.

What are some of the things you do to help make the world a little bit greener?

We have a green kitchen for the business. We reuse jars and use a sterilization system that is environmentally friendly. And we use only earth-friendly products.

Is there a particular non-profit you support?

We do fundraising for CARE. They provide foods and education and healthy information to moms around the world. We also support Yoga for Youth, an L.A.-based company that teaches yoga to teens who are pregnant and about taking care of their bodies and babies.

What’s your favorite thing about living in L.A.?

I would say it’s the consciousness. There’s still a long way to go, but you have easy access to a lot of environmentally friendly things like organic foods. Now that we service the country, we see that so many moms and dads elsewhere can’t get organic food where they live. We don’t think about that living here.

What would you say is the city’s undiscovered or underrated jewel?

We like to go to the canyon a lot. You feel like you’re on vacation walking through and there's a great green area for the kids to run around.

Where do you like to take out-of-town visitors?

Most of our out-of-towners are from the East and tend to like to go to the beach—or anywhere it’s warm. We also like to go to the Huntington Gardens in Pasadena.

What’s your favorite vacation destination?

We like to go to Tassajara in Carmel Valley. It’s a Zen Buddhist retreat. It’s gorgeous and they have natural hot springs and amazing food included in your stay. Plus, it’s really affordable.

What’s your favorite weekend outdoor activity?

We enjoy spending time with our kids; we have a 9-year-old and a 2-year-old and we’re expecting another. We do as many kid activities as we can, just to spend time together.

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?

Bodhi tree.

Describe your path to green. How and when you became eco-conscious.

I have a MSW and I grew up with hippie parents so I have always been more conscious than most people might have started off in life. Also, having kids made a difference—you want to do whatever you can to have a lovely place for them to be and play, to breathe air, and go to the ocean, and experience nature. We don’t want to ruin what we have.
