Khatija Dadabhoy
      by Stef McDonald
Khatija Dadabhoy launched Ghalia Organic Desserts in 2004, and she characterizes her business as a "natural blending of my growing interest in living a greener lifestyle and my love of cooking and baking." We've tasted her baked goods and can vouch for the fact that organic is delicious. Dadabhoy talked to Greenopia about her work and living green in L.A.

Best part of your job?

Eating the desserts, of course! No, really, it’s being able to provide a product that people can feel good about putting in their bodies and that I can have an integrity about producing.

What is your favorite local green restaurant?

I would have to say that right now Tender Greens in Culver City is my favorite. The food is so simple but so good. I also love that I can feel good about eating there because they are committed to supporting local farms and using organic ingredients wherever they can.

Where do you shop for organic groceries?

Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s mostly. I also try to get to the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market on a Saturday morning when I can.

What are some of your favorite local green businesses?

I’ve used Greenleaf Organic Pest Control for bug problems in my home. They use natural methods of pest control and they do a great job of getting rid of the problem. For manicures and pedicures, Rescue Hand and Foot Spa. I love that they use formaldehyde-free and phthalate-free nail polish. I also love the organic coffee at Urth Caffe.

What’s your favorite thing about living in the city? Least favorite?

I love that there is so much to do and so much great food! Least favorite: I wish it were easier to get around to different parts of the city without a car.

What’s your favorite vacation destination?

I love Jamaica!

What’s your favorite weekend outdoor activity?

Being outside by the pool with my kids and friends.

What’s an eco-friendly gift you like to give?

Desserts packaged in a beautiful box made from natural materials that the recipient can reuse and add to their home décor.

Describe your path to green: how and when you became eco-conscious.

It started about seven years ago when I was experiencing some health issues and began researching a cleaner diet. Then I had a baby and became more interested in a greener lifestyle. I continually learn ways to incorporate more green practices into my lifestyle.
