As one of the co-founders of
Method, Adam Lowry says he is proud of “getting green cleaning products in
the hands of people who aren’t necessarily green.” Lowry studied environmental
science at Stanford and worked at the Carnegie Institute before partnering with
high school friend Eric Ryan in 2000 to start Method, a line of eco-friendly
cleaning products now widely available.
What’s the best part of your job?
I love the diversity of my job, working with the designer, the operations team, the marketing team—I get to work with many different types of people.
What are some of your favorite local green businesses?
Given how much I travel, I’m a heavy dry cleaner and I go to Art Cleaners on Cole Street, where they don’t use any perc. I buy a lot of home stuff at Spring, a great little store on Polk Street. And there’s a great little rug place in Hayes Valley called Peace Industry that has felted rugs with vegetable dyes.
What is your favorite local green restaurant?
When I eat out, I’m looking for more local choices. One of my favorite places is Fish in Sausalito. They’ve got some local salmon and tuna and they bring in what was caught seconds ago. It’s right on the docks. My favorite lunch spot is the burger joint in the Ferry building where they have the Tuesday Farmer’s Market. I get the grass-fed buffalo burgers.
Where do you shop for organic groceries?
My wife and I belong to one of the box clubs where we get seasonal produce every two weeks. And then I also shop at the Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays and I get meat at Whole Foods. I look for grass-fed beef and wild and sustainably farmed fish.
What’s your favorite thing about living in the Bay area?
There’s so much diversity of things you do within walking distance to your house. I live in Cole Valley and there are tucked away neighborhoods and people actively enjoying city life. And after a short bike ride you can be in wilderness.
What would you say is the city’s undiscovered or underrated jewel?
I like Buena Vista Park and there’s never anybody there.
Where do you like to take out-of-town visitors?
It might seem like a cheesy thing to do but I like to go across the bridge and look across the city. And Coit Tower is under-rated.
What’s your favorite vacation destination?
A tiny little town in northern Michigan called Harbor Springs, right on Lake Michigan. It’s my happy place.
What’s your favorite weekend outdoor activity?
Sailing or wind surfing on the bay.
If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?
So many different choices! I’m gonna go with a redwood cause I’m tall. I'm six feet six so it fits.
Describe your path to green.
I grew up in Michigan with unspoiled natural beauty. I wouldn’t bring a water bottle when I went sailing because you’d just drink water from the lake. That’s when I said I want to work to preserve this.
