Interviews
Brandon Levy
      by Stef McDonald
Brandon Levy started his organic T-shirt company, Naked Cotton, after searching for stylish shirts made of organic cotton without finding options he liked—so he set out to make some himself. He oversees the entire process locally (even the organic cotton was grown in California) and sells the shirts at Ecologique and other shops, and online.
Best part of your job?

Introducing people to organic cotton clothing with earth-friendly printing and dyes. It’s great to see them realize that it’s a higher quality product—and better.

What is your favorite local green restaurant?

There’s a restaurant I like a lot that gets most of their produce from the local farmers’ market: Isa in the marina. Everything is good and always fresh.

Where do you shop for organic groceries?

I’m kind of a Whole Foods addict.

What are some of your favorite local green businesses?

Greener Printer in Berkeley print business cards and materials. Also, Del Forte Denim.

Is there a particular environmental non-profit you support?

The Sustainable Cotton Project takes big leaps.

What’s your favorite thing about living in the city? Least favorite?

My favorite thing is the people. 99.9 percent of the people are friendly and unique. It’s like no other city I’ve ever been. Least favorite: the traffic.

What would you say is the city’s undiscovered or underrated jewel?

The Legion of Honor Museum has one of the most beautiful views of San Francisco. It also has one of the largest Rodin sculptures.

Where do you like to take out-of-town visitors?

Usually I take them on a walk on the beach and to the Golden Gate Bridge.

What’s your favorite vacation destination?

I have to say it’s a tie between Aspen, Colorado because I love skiing, and Southwest Germany, where I lived for a while.

What’s your favorite weekend outdoor activity?

Hiking. I love Yosemite and the lower Sierra Nevadas by Mt. Whitney.

What’s an eco-friendly gift you like to give?

Tees from my line.

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?

Some type of pine tree.

Describe your path to green: how and when you became eco-conscious.

My screenprinter explained to me the benefits of organic cotton and then I did research on my own and was astonished about how cotton was grown and being used. I couldn’t see why I shouldn’t be the one to push eco-conscious T-shirts.
