Just in Time for Oscar: Hollywood's Celebrity Eco-Offenders!
      by Katherine Butler

It’s Oscar week here in Hollywood, and that means one thing. Hollywood Blvd will be closed off for three weeks forcing people like me to side-street it all the way to yoga, usually while honking at slow moving Starline Tours vans filled with fans. Okay, maybe it means one other thing – that celebs are being lauded right and left for all their greatness. Hooray for Hollywood!

And we all know that celebrities are jumping on the green bandwagon left and right. Leo DiCaprio’s got green web sites, and Adrian Grenier’s using recycled blue jeans as insulation in his walls. And we applaud their good green intentions. But sometimes, a celebrity can lose his or her way. They can travel through the green forest and, horrors of horrors, end up a just little brown around the edges. Now, we love ourselves the positive vibes. But sometimes, just once and a while, you need to call out the bad for the brown. So here’s our look at some of the browner deeds done by celebrities in Hollywood.

In one year alone, Barbra Streisand allegedly spent $20,000 to water her lawn. She owns five homes and air-conditions her 12,000 square foot barn. Apparently “the way we were” is to be an eco-baddie with over-chilled horses.

Woody Harrelson is traditionally known as a green celeb. He’s the foremost public advocate of hemp, known as the ultimate sustainable crop. And he works tirelessly to promote it. But he caused a stir at a 2008 Cannes when he discovered that he forgot his favorite vegan belt and shoes. So he had them overnighted from Maui. That’s quite a carbon footprint created by your vegan shoes, Woody!

Madonna is about as brown as they come. As one blogger noted, her carbon footprint is only dwarfed by her ego. The Daily Mail notes that for her 2006 World Tour, “she flew by private jet, transporting a team of up to 100 technicians and dancers around the globe.”  She also reportedly owns a Mercedes Maybach, two Range Rovers, an Audi A8 and a Mini Cooper S. Living in a material world, indeed!

Gwyneth Paltrow is the more common Hollywood green offender – the one who acts green for the cameras but is more dedicated to the green in her wallet. Ms. Paltrow rides to the Oscars in hybrids, gets pal-sy with Al Gore, and urges Americans to “act green” by promoting causes like Act Green. But she caused a stir by promoting the new fall collection of fur-lined boots and bags from Tod’s. This is also a company that uses ostrich and snakeskin in its products.

And finally, Sir Paul McCartney has always been the greenest of all knights in the United Kingdom. But Sir Paul once received a free Lexus LS600H Hybrid – that was flown in from Japan. Now, to be fair, Sir Paul was outraged when he found out his new schwag had a Madonna-sized carbon footprint attached to it. Treehugger reports that the green car was “delivery by plane instead of by boat means its transport footprint was 100 times larger, and it got four miles per gallon for the first 5,966 miles of its life without even hitting the road.”  Let it be, Paul, let it be!

The Environmental Media Associaton Awards Show Proves That Green Is Right!
Source: The Green Living Guy© Pictures Source: Wire Images and Tamara Henry While I was in California on my The Green Living Guy book tour that some of you might had seen pictures on my facebook page, you might have seen pictures of my The Green Living Guy book tour. It was my first opportunity like that ever so rock out and get green answers. Many many thanks to my sponsors A Lot To Say, Inc. for helping me to get out to the West Coast for this book tour. The Environmental Media Association held their 20th Annual Awards Show on October 16, 2010 at the Warner Brothers studios in Los Angeles. The Green Living Guy© was there in attendance, at the Green Carpet, meeting amazing people and loving every second of it (even the constant light schvitz of rain). I sported my favorite new CHARGE t-shirt from A Lot To Say, Inc about electric cars and tux jacket (my calling card). Below is a picture of me at the Green Carpet with my buddy Tamara Henry from Tamara with Green T. One of the more enjoyable parts of the night was when a great singer, Kenny Loggins sang and the whole crowd (well mostly Table 63 and 60) sang along. Table 63, you know who you were!! Also got to sport my new CHARGE shirt from A Lot To Say, Inc. as well. Jeff Skoll (Philanthropist/Entrepreneur) who founded Take Part.com and Participant Media. I was interviewed for that website when I worked with my sponsors A Lot To Say, inc to go to the Sundance Film Festival.
