The Commendable:
Chevron’s sustainability reporting is fair, but missing a lot of metrics. Chevron emits about 57.4 million tons of greenhouse gases each year (a big reduction from the year before), but when that is scaled against production it is in the middle of the pack as far as efficiency. Chevron was also around average in terms of volume of oil spilled in 2009.

The Questionable:
The biggest issue we have is the lack of environmental metrics provided by Chevron. We were unable to find figures pertaining to water consumption and waste generation. These are important items to compile and Chevron should release those figures as most of its competitors have done. One other issue we have with Chevron is its 798 oil spills in 2009. This was one of the largest numbers reported by any company we analyzed and even when normalized, Chevron is still amongst the worst. To be fair, Chevron was about average in the amount of oil spilled, but such an alarming number of spill events are certainly worth noting.

Spills Happen:
Chevron has gotten a lot of press as of late about a multi-billion dollar fine that has been handed down by a court in Ecuador. Both Chevron and the plaintiff have appealed the fine. It is also worth noting that the fine is not the result of a recent spill, but from environmental violations accumulated by Texaco while they were operating in Ecuador. When Chevron purchased Texaco they assumed its defendant status in this trial. The fine and court proceedings are a result of dumping billions of gallons of pollution in the Amazon that allegedly were not properly cleaned up by Texaco.

Greenopia Verdict:
Chevron still has some major work to do. There have been some slight improvements, but not enough for them to improve in our rankings just yet.
