The Commendable:
Shell has better than average sustainability reporting and provides data for almost all important environmental metrics. Shell has shown steady improvement in its GHG emissions (down to 67 million tons for the 2009 year). When normalized against revenue, Shell has one of lowest emissions per dollar earned. Shell has also shown steady improvements in the number of spills each year and its general resource consumption. Shell was one of our top performers in water consumption per barrel of oil equivalent produced.

The Questionable:
In general, Shell struggles a bit when you normalize their production impacts against the amount of oil they produce. That is to say that aren’t nearly as efficient per barrel of oil produced as other companies we studied. Shell’s biggest logistical issue is its creation of solid and hazardous waste. Its figures have gotten much worse over time and this is a bit of a concern.

Spills Happen:
Shell has had numerous large spills in Nigeria, but as we noted above, are largely due to sabotage. Thus, maybe not all the blame can be put on Shell, but there is certainly something suspicious about the whole situation. We encourage our readers to read up on the circumstances and make their own decision regarding the issue.

Greenopia Verdict:
Shell has moved up to number 2 on our list this year because of improved efficiency, very good environmental reporting, and being proactive in alternative energies. We hope to see Shell continue to improve in the future.
