The Commendable: Shell has above average sustainability reporting and provides data for almost all important environmental metrics. The only issue we had was being forced to convert certain statistics into more common units, but overall Shell’s environmental reporting is solid. Shell has shown steady improvement in its GHG emissions (down to 92 million tons in 2007). When normalized to revenue, Shell has one of lowest emissions per dollar earned. Shell has also shown steady improvements in the number of spills each year and also the amount of water it consumes. Shell has a great portfolio of renewable and cleaner fuel types and funds projects in Wind, Solar, Hydrogen, LNG, and Natural Gas. Shell has used billions of dollars over the past few years to fund these technologies. Shell is also renowned for its position in climate change. Shell not only admits human actions causing global warming, but also agrees to the Kyoto Protocol. The Questionable: Shell’s biggest issue is its creation of solid and hazardous waste. Its figures have gotten much worse over time and this is a bit of a concern. Shell is also not very efficient with its water, having one of the worst rated when scaled to production. However the area of biggest concern with Shell is its 820 oil spills in 2007 which were in the neighborhood of 7.5 million liters of oil. When normalized against production, this was the second highest level of any major oil manufacturer in the US. In its defense, though, many of these spills are caused by sabotage in its Nigerian pipelines, but Shell has come under some fire for its support of a militaristic regime in Nigeria. Thus, although no oil source is necessarily great for society and the environment, Shell seems to be even a bit more questionable in this regard. Lastly, although it has shown steady improvement over the past few years, Shell’s GHG emissions are still huge and, when scaled to production, is one of the worst (emissions per barrel of oil equivalent). Spills Happen: Shell has had numerous large spills in Nigeria, but as we noted above, are largely due to sabotage. Thus, maybe not all the blame can be put on Shell, but there is certainly something fishy about the whole situation. We encourage our readers to read up on the circumstances and make their own decision regarding the issue. Second Opinion: The Sierra Club’s Environmentalist’s Guide to Gasoline has Shell in the middle of the pack where it is commended for its alternative fuel types, stance on climate change, and improved GHG emissions. However the Sierra Club dings Shell for several violations and its involvement in Nigeria. Greenopia Verdict: An overall solid score is marred by questionable oil sources and a large volume of spills. Having said that, Shell is headed in the right direction, but it needs to make a few improvements before it can crack the top of our list. |
