The Commendable: Citgo only had 16 oil spills in 2009, which even after being normalized is one of the lowest numbers we came across in this study. Citgo has also installed some equipment (scrubbers) on a few of its plants to reduce emissions and cut down on air pollution. Citgo is a major producer of ethanol and has surrounded this endeavor with significant amounts of capital. The Questionable: Citgo had the least complete environmental reporting of any oil company we looked at. We couldn’t even track down the total greenhouse gas emissions, something that every other company reports in some capacity. And even though Citgo had an impressively low number of oil spills, they don’t even report the volume of oil spilled, so there is no way of being sure how big of an accomplishment this is. Likewise we don’t have a feel for the amount of water consumed or waste generated. Lastly, Citgo could benefit from other alternative fuels besides ethanol. Ethanol has questionable life cycle benefits and there are many other greener fuel types out there. Spills Happen: Citgo has had a few large spills in the past several years including one in Louisiana that released around 47,000 barrels (almost 2 million gallons) back in July of 2006. Greenopia Verdict: Lackluster reporting and a questionable commitment to the environment places Citgo in the bottom of the barrel. Hopefully Citgo will begin to improve its transparency and show some environmental improvements. |
