The Commendable: BP or Beyond Petroleum publishes one of the best sustainability reports of all the major oil companies. The report contains just about every environmental variable you would want to see and is relatively easy to use and understand (i.e. no questionable unit choices which force the user to convert everything and most of the wording is straight-forward). BP also is relatively solid given its greenhouse gas emissions. Not only is BP decreasing its emissions per unit of production, but when you normalize its emissions against revenue and/or production, it comes out as one of the more efficient companies. BP was about middle of the pack in terms of water consumption. The Questionable: BP has also been involved in arguably one of the worst man-made disasters of all time with the spill in the Gulf of Mexico last year. Not only was the spill a catastrophe which could have been avoided, but there are also some issues as to how the spill was handled. In all fairness, BP was much more forthcoming than other oil companies have been in major oil spills in the past, but there was still room for improvement. Spills Happen: As noted above, BP was involved in one of the worst oil spills of all time. And while it is not entirely clear where all the blame should lie, it does seem that there is evidence of negligence by BP. But, given their response, we believe that if this spill would have happened under the helm of any other oil company it could have been handled much more poorly. Thus BP should be responsible and move to continue to address the disaster, but we also feel they have done a better than expected job reacting to the disaster when you look at almost every other major oil spill. It is a shame that we expect so little from oil companies these days. Greenopia Verdict: The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill knocks BP down to fourth, and hopefully BP will make a strong effort to continue to clean up the spill, compensate those who were affected, and try to re-green its image. |
