Best Organic Chocolate for Valentine's Day

If your sweetie likes sweets, and better yet, organic sweets, then get ready to get your taste buds rocking. I mean, how many of you have ever fantasized about being Charlie Bucket, wandering through Gene Wilder’s chocolate room in Willy Wonka’s factory? (Gene Wilder’s room, not Johnny Depp’s creepy Michael Jackson-esque with pale skin and one monotonous Oompa Loompa, sorry Tim Burton.) And if anyone can think of a way to plant herself under that chocolate waterfall without ending up in a piece of tubing, sign me up.

But for this Valentine’s Day, take a moment away from the fantasies of chocolate paradise and put your minds towards keeping it organic and fair trade. We’ve got one of the best guides around on the tastiest green chocolate you can get on the market. First, we released a product rating of ten candy companies, rating them in their of their eco-friendly practices. The two companies to earn all four coveted Greenopia leaves were Endangered Species Chocolate and Theo. Next was Yummy Earth with three leaves, to be followed by Cadbury, who earned one leaf.

And that’s super sweet if a chocolate company practices sustainability. But if it tastes like the bottom of your shoe, who wants to present it as a token of affection this Valentine’s Day? Naturally, we turned our taste buds to the arduous task of eating a ton of chocolate to see how it tastes up. (And you get to read all about our results in greater detail here.)

Lucky for green chocholaistas, there is some fantastically tasty eco-friendly chocolate out there. Endangered Species Chocolate offers almost all of its products are certified organic, shade grown, and/or ethically grown. Much of their chocolate is vegan. They use water based inks on its packaging and it also contains recycled content. Endangered Species Chocolate is made in a LEED Certified building. Want to buy for Valentine’s Day? Click here.

Theo Chocolate also gets high green marks. According to Theo, throughout the manufacturing process every care is taken to preserve the integrity of the cacao. The line ranges from 74 - 91% cacao content, and offers a truly uncompromised chocolate experience, rich in both satisfying flavor and antioxidants. Many of their lines are vegan, soy, and dairy free. Check out their Valentine Day’s selection here.

And to adding a new entry into the organic chocolate mix is Green & Black, an organic chocolate company that recently committed to going 100% fair trade. Recently, the company announced its commitment to move its entire chocolate range, worldwide, to fair trade. Green & Black has sourced their organic Trinitario cocoa beans from cooperatives in the Dominican Republic over the last 10 years. This new commitment from the company means an investment of more than $485,000 each year over the next 10 years paid to Dominican Republic cocoa farmers and their communities.

Great. But how does it taste? I would like to say it – awesome! Suffice to say, it will earn your Valentine’s points with your sweetie. Naturally, avoid the higher cocoa content if you want a sweeter experience. Green & Black’s Dark 85% chocolate bar is smooth and rich in antioxidants, but it’s not particularly sweet and equivalent to a drinking a deep, red wine when you just want a sweet white. Our tasters found it a bit too much except for one dark chocolate aficionado, who declared it awesome. G&B rounds out their selections with chocolate bars like “Maya Gold” – orange and spice extracts in dark chocolate. This packs a powerful taste punch, like the Dark chocolate. There’s the Toffee bar in milk chocolate, which is extremely tasty – light, crunchy, good. If you like sweet, silky milk chocolate, grab this bar. And finally, there was the White chocolate, which was (cue chorus of angels singing) UTTERLY DIVINE. It’s sweet, buttery, and has Madagascar vanilla pressed into it.
