10 Green Guys We Love
      by Katherine Butler

News Archives

It’s a toxic world out there. And by toxic, I refer to Britney Spears. Via music videos. Containing model guys and interesting vinyl costumes. Naturally!

But despite the warblings of Ms. Spears, there are great gobs of good men folk to be found. And we have a look at the ones who make the green world red hot! (This is me, pointing an index finger while making the “sizzle” sound.) Some are family men. Some are swingin’ singles. And all of them do their part to make the world a cleaner, better place for the rest of us.

Seriously, is there anything cuter than that?

Jack Johnson
Jack Johnson is said to have “green groupies.” Heck, YEAH! How can you not love this dreamy crooner who makes it a priority to save the planet? His 2008 tour was completely carbon offset. His last album Sleep Through Static was recorded on analog tape machines 100% powered by solar energy. His label, Brushfire Records, donates 1% to the Planet. And he recently renovated his offices to be completely eco-friendly.

Ron Gonen
Named a 2009 Champion of the Earth by the United Nations, Ron Gonen is the co-founder and CEO of RecycleBank. This means he works to motivate households to recycle like never before! Ron is regularly invited to speak at conferences and venues around the world, including The Climate Forum in Switzerland, Sustainable Brands 09, Columbia University, and the Economist 8th Annual Innovation Summit in the UK. RecycleBank was honored as a 2009 World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer.

Damien Somerset
Damien is the creator of Zaproot, a green web series with over 80 episodes and 20 million views. He’s also worked for a variety of other green media outlets like Treehugger and GOOD Magazine. In his spare time, he’s having a hell of a time building a gray water container garden on his patio. As Damien tells it, “I wanna yell at the tomatoes “grow, damn it, grow!” He also notes that he is very much in a relationship and hopes his “girlfriend is gonna be able to find this, right?”

Adrian Grenier
Why do we love Grenier of the dreamy eyes and the dusky facial visage? Because he uses his celebrity to promote more than a cautionary tale about DUIs and bi-polar disorders. He has a show for Planet Green called Alter Ego, which is all about promoting a green agenda in buildings and more. In an interview about the show, he asserts that “Less travel, less waste, and more substance is our goal here.” And in terms of substance we say, mission accomplished!

Shea Gunther
Shea Gunther has been bouncing around the green blogosphere for almost as long as there has been one to bounce around. He covers climate change, green politics, and renewable energy for the Mother Nature Network. Shane started a blog in 2002 and drew his first paycheck as an environmental blogger in 2006 when he started eco-blog network Green Options. He lives in the small city of Portland, Maine and loves getting around town on his electric bike. When he's not trying to save the world, he can be found playing ultimate frisbee, rock climbing, or running along the ocean.

Ahmir Thompson aka Questlove

Ahmir Thompson, drummer for the iconic band The Roots, splits his time between saving the earth and being super cool. EarthFirst reported that at a 2009, pre-Grammy Awards jam session, “he and the group signed compost bins and gave them to schools that came up with the most creative composting campaigns on their campuses.”

Matt Embrey
In 2008, Matt Embrey helped launch greenUPGRADER, a cool site to enable people to upgrade to a greener lifestyle. Since then, it has grown into the LiveOAK Media network, which consists of 4 sites: Earth & Industry, Ecopolitology, and Crisp Green.  By day, Matt is a humble public servant. But by night, he is a DIY fiend, reluctant social media monger, and avid political junkie.

Doug Mazeffa
Doug Mazeffa is our very own Research Director for Greenopia. This means he spends his time looking at businesses, products, and brand guides to tell us what’s green and what we should avoid with ten foot poles. Besides being a great, green specialist, he can also be found out in Santa Barbara’s wine country or doing something outdoors. Eventually, he’s going to cross over into the wine industry and possible adopt a Welsh Pembroke Corgi named Tesla.

Jeffrey Davis
Jeffrey Davis is an honest to God southern boy. A native to Nashville, TN, where he still lives, Jeffrey spent his formative years mostly in trees, rather than on the ground. He decided it best to keep his head firmly suspended in the clouds into his adult life. In January of 2007, he helped kick-start The Fun Times Guide to Living Green. Jeffrey also writes for Green Lifestyle magazine, Naturally Savvy, and a few other places around the web.

Doug Gunzelmann
Why do we dig this guy? Because right this moment, this green entrepreneur is mountain biking across the Transamazonica, the unfinished 6000 km highway cut through the heart of the Amazon Rainforest. As Doug puts it, “By returning to nature and following this scar across one of earth’s most precious natural resources, I hope to educate people about the importance of nature in our lives and inspire people to actively engage their environment in sustainable ways.” Click here to follow Doug’s trek!
