Greenopia publishes extensive green business directories, product directories, and brand directories, as well as offering a growing community, news articles, blogs, and tips to help everyone eat, shop, and live green.

Our Directories

Greenopia's directories guide consumers to the businesses and products to help lead a more sustainable lifestyle. All listings are independently researched, rated, and ranked using unique sets of life cycle based and category-specific criteria, ensuring that each business and product meets precise qualifications. We never accept payment for listings.

Our Ratings

The Greenopia Leaf Award allows consumers to easily assess the overall greenness of a business or product. Four-Leaf Rated listings meet our most stringent criteria while One-Leaf Rated listings meet our minimum qualifying standards. The Greenopia Scorecard allows consumers to easily see the specific areas of greenness in the product’s or brand’s life cycle.

Company Overview:
There are over 31,000 McDonalds spanning the globe which gross over $23 billion each year.

Green Efforts:
McDonalds has begun to incorporate some green elements into its culture. First, it has opened a refrigerant free store in Denmark and has plans for additional green stores in the future. McDonalds uses some recycled content in their packaging and has a comprehensive waste diversion program. It also only sources beef from responsible sources (especially in regard to rainforest degradation). Finally, McDonalds has begun analyzing its supply chain to search for environmental efficiencies.

Green Issues:
In the green spectrum, McDonalds is a light green in every category. What we have listed above is good, but there is still a lot of room for improvement. For starters it would be nice to see natural and/or organic products offered and some widespread green building design elements. McDonalds could pursue LEED certification in some of its new restaurants (as some of its competitors have done), and try to make their cooking process more efficient with energy star certified fixtures.

Greenopia Verdict:
McDonalds seems to be making a dedicated effort, but more needs to be done before it could be considered to be truly green.
