Honor Roll: The University of California – San Diego (UCSD) has great environmental reporting and has joined up with the ACUPCC. UCSD has almost a dozen buildings in the LEED process, and requires that all new construction must be to at least LEED Silver standards. UCSD has an incredible recycling rate, diverting over two-thirds of its waste and is developing a composting program. About 15% of UCSD’s energy comes from renewable sources (very high relative to other schools), the school has a very comprehensive water conservation program, and many campus vehicles run off of alternative fuels (mostly biodiesel or straight electric). Held After Class: The climate numbers reported by UCSD for the ACUPCC were good, but not great. Given its favorable climate, the per student number in particular could be improved. UCSD also could stand to add more green food options. It has a decent selection, but not as many as other schools. Green Grade: The University of California at San Diego is very green and with a few minor changes could become a four leaf school. |
