Honor Roll: Penn State has good environmental reporting and has done a lot on the green building design front. Penn State has several LEED buildings, with about another half dozen seeking certification, and all new buildings must be at least LEED Silver. Penn State also has 53% recycling rate, putting it well above the average for large institutions, not to mention its very impressive composting program. Penn State gets about 20% of its energy from renewable sources (wind and biomass). Penn State does have some local, organic, and fair trade food options. The campus has several alternative fuel vehicles and is in the process of adding more. Penn State was about average in its water conservation measures. Held After Class: First off, we would like to see Penn State join the APUPCC and more transparently report its emission data, but the areas where it could improve the most are with food sourcing and water. Many schools are able to get a good chunk (sometimes up to 50-60%) percent of their food locally and/or organically grown and Penn State did not seem to have quite the comprehensive water plans in place that some other universities have (such as using native plants, grey water, and drip irrigation). Green Grade: Great green building design, a good renewable portfolio, and a great waste program propel the Nittany Lions into our top 10. |
