Honor Roll: Stanford University had very good environmental reporting that was detailed but still very easy to find information. Although it does not have any LEED buildings on campus (it has several LEED equivalent), Stanford has one building that is seeking a LEED certification. Stanford also requires all new buildings to be constructed to a LEED-Gold equivalent standard. Stanford has one of the best recycling rates of any of the schools we looked at, diverting 64% of its landfill waste while also offering a comprehensive composting program. Stanford utilizes some renewable energy (solar) and about 40% of its food items are from eco-friendly sources (local and/or organic). Stanford has a fleet of hundreds of electric vehicles and is presently testing a solar car. Stanford’s water conservation measures are above average. Held After Class: One thing that surprised us was that Stanford has not yet joined the ACUPCC, making it one of the few high scoring schools not to report this information. We also wouldn’t mind seeing more renewable energy or purchasing some offsets. Lastly, even though Stanford has its own standard, the addition of LEED buildings (even LEED Existing Buildings) would help its greenness. Although LEED is not perfect, it is a credible minimal standard that is very transparent. Green Grade: Stanford certainly is deserving of top honors on our list of greenest universities. |
