Honor Roll: University of California – Davis (UCD) has above average environmental reporting. Its carbon numbers reported by the ACUPCC were around average. UCD has several LEED buildings as well as a few in the works and all new construction must be at least to LEED Silver standards. UCD has a very good recycling rate at around 50%, which is about twice what the average college recycling rate is. UCD has a comprehensive composting program and utilizes some solar energy for its buildings and water heating. Almost a third of the food at UCD is local, organic, or fair trade, and it is striving to hit its 1990 emission levels by 2020. Almost 95% of its vehicles are powered by CNG and/or hydrogen and UCD has an above average water conservation plan for its landscaping and facilities. Held After Class: We would like to see a more ambitious climate goal rather than just hitting 1990 levels by 2020. Many schools have set goals of 20-30% below that and a few have even pledged to go carbon neutral by a certain date. The other issue that concerns us are the per student and per 1000 sq. ft. emissions numbers for UCD. Although they are about average according to the data we tracked, when you consider California’s favorable climate, the numbers are considerably less impressive. Green Grade: UC-Davis has great facility management and green building initiatives making it a green University. |
