Honor Roll: The University or Oregon (UO) has very good environmental reporting and has incredible emission numbers when scaled per 1000 square foot and per student according to ACUPCC data. Although it only has 1 LEED building, there are several going through the process and all new construction must be LEED Silver or better. UO has a very good recycling program, diverting about 47% of its waste and it composts all of its yard waste. UO purchases almost 7,000 MJ of Renewable Energy Credits (and uses renewable energy on campus to boot) and it has a wide selection of local, organic, and fair trade food items available on campus. UO has several vehicles in its fleet that operate on biodiesel or straight electricity and it also has one of the best water conservation plans for its facilities and landscaping of the schools we looked at. Held After Class: We would have liked to see some more LEED buildings, and although UO does use its own standard, it is not clear if it is as rigorous as some of the higher levels of LEED. But, with its new construction standard, it is only a matter of time before more are added to the campus. We would also like to see more in the way of green food options. Green Grade: University of Oregon has some of the greenest practices we came across in our study and deserves to be in the top 3. |
