All listings are independently researched, rated, and ranked using unique sets of life cycle based and category-specific criteria, ensuring that each business and product meets precise qualifications. We never accept payment for listings.
The Greenopia Leaf Award allows consumers to easily assess the overall greenness of a business or product. Four-Leaf Rated listings meet our most stringent criteria while One-Leaf Rated listings meet our minimum qualifying standards. The Greenopia Scorecard allows consumers to easily see the specific areas of greenness in the product’s or brand’s life cycle.

Honor Roll: Duke has very good environmental reporting and has submitted emissions data to the ACUPCC. Duke is especially aggressive in pursuing green building design with 20 buildings that have received a LEED certification or are in the process of obtaining one. All new construction must also be built to LEED standards. Duke has about an average recycling rate. Strikingly, Duke gets about a third of its food from local and/or organic sources and is in the process of greening its campus vehicle fleet. Duke also offsets a huge amount of energy by purchasing RECs, something very few schools do. Held After Class: Duke has a staggeringly high emissions per student relative to other schools (some schools literally have 1/10th the footprint per student) and its emissions per square foot are also very high. Some of this may be due to its climate, but there are plenty of schools in more extreme regions who perform substantially better. And while it is great to see Duke adding green vehicles to its campus fleet, it is still lagging behind what many other schools are doing. Green Grade: While Green Devils may now be a slightly more appropriate new name, Duke fans can rejoice, you came out on top of UNC in terms of greenness. |
