The Greenopia Leaf Award allows consumers to easily assess the overall greenness of a business or product. Four-Leaf Rated listings meet our most stringent criteria while One-Leaf Rated listings meet our minimum qualifying standards. The Greenopia Scorecard allows consumers to easily see the specific areas of greenness in the product’s or brand’s life cycle.

Green Efforts: Labatt is another large scale brewery commonly found in the US. Labatt also happens to be among the greenest major beer brands. Labatt has average environmental reporting claiming improvements in most environmental indicators, but most language is vague. Labatt uses its waste ethanol for fuel sources and is monitoring its energy use at a detailed level so it can continue to decrease its footprint. Labatt also has some general elements of green building design. Most impressively, however, is that Labatt actively refills its glass bottles (which is more eco-friendly than recycling) and claims it refills bottles on average 15 times before recycling them. Although refillable plastic bottles are still better than glass, this is still one of the most impressive initiatives we came across in the industry and it represents a significant savings. Green Issues: Labatt has yet to adopt any organic beers which have environmental benefits in numerous impact categories including euthrophication and water pollution. We would also like to see Labatt utilize more renewable energy. Greenopia Verdict: Labatt was one of the few major breweries who qualified for a Greenopia leaf which is deserved because of a solid refilling program for its bottles.
