Green Efforts: Sam Adams is another well known beer label in the US. Sam Adams is in the process of investigating the inclusion of renewable energy of its facilities and also has a comprehensive bottle recycling program. Green Issues: Sam Adams is lagging behind most of the other major beer labels we studied. Their reporting is subpar, with no data pertaining to most environmental indicators. Sam Adams does not brew an organic beer as of this time and hasn’t greened its bottles or transportation fleet. Even recycling glass bottles (because of its modest energy recovery) still has a higher impact than other packaging types and there are many greener alternatives out there that beer companies could pursue. Lastly, we were unable to find any information pertaining to green building design initiatives undertaken by Sam Adams or Boston Brewing beyond that they are considering the use of some renewable energy types. Greenopia Verdict: Sam Adams is lagging a bit in the green arena and hopefully its preliminary investigations will get them on the path to green. |
