US Airways Average Fleet Age: 12.6 Greenopia Environment Achievement:
|
|
Efforts: The average age of craft in US Airways’ fleet is about 12 years old which places it in the middle of pack. US Airways also has installed winglets on many of its crafts. These allow for better fuel efficiency and reduce vehicle emissions. US Airways has very good environmental reporting as well. Out of all the major airlines, US Airways has been one of the most aggressive in decreasing the environmental footprint of its buildings. Recently, US Airways has begun researching biofuels and we hope to see them join the ranks of Virgin America and United as leaders in the biofuel arena. Finally, US Airways has taken several steps to reduce its emissions including more direct flight routes, lightweighting planes, adjusting landing procedures, and doing engine washes. Issues: US Airways also lagging a bit on an in-flight recycling program. In spite of its great reporting, very little information is revealed in this area. US Airways does not offer much in the way of organic or fair trade food items and it also does not give passengers the ability to offset their carbon footprint (from traveling) when they purchase their ticket. Greenopia Verdict: US Airways has significantly improved its environmental performance and we hope to see this trend continue. |
