All listings are independently researched, rated, and ranked using unique sets of life cycle based and category-specific criteria, ensuring that each business and product meets precise qualifications. We never accept payment for listings.
The Greenopia Leaf Award allows consumers to easily assess the overall greenness of a business or product. Four-Leaf Rated listings meet our most stringent criteria while One-Leaf Rated listings meet our minimum qualifying standards. The Greenopia Scorecard allows consumers to easily see the specific areas of greenness in the product’s or brand’s life cycle.

Efforts: American publishes one of the best sustainability reports in the industry. It also has fitted some of its planes with winglets which help reduce fuel consumption and therefore emissions. American is also researching alternative fuels which can help reduce emissions and energy intensity further. Issues: American’s average fleet age is on the older end of the spectrum coming it at around 15 years. American also does have any LEED certified terminals or offices. No organic, fair trade, or local food is offered on American flights as well. American does not offer a dedicated carbon offset feature like many of its competitors. It does have an offset tool (called Be Green), but it seems to be geared more towards its frequent flier miles program. Greenopia Verdict: In spite of some good reporting, a lack of environmental initiatives place American towards the bottom of our rankings. |
