Northwest Average Fleet Age: 18.5 Greenopia Environment Achievement:
|
|
Efforts: Although Northwest was recently purchased by Delta Airlines, since they had separate environmental initiatives and infrastructure, we thought it would be worth analyzing (plus Delta’s score will potentially become a composite of the two in the future). Northwest has the oldest fleet of any of the major companies with some sources putting the average plane age at around 18 years. Northwest utilizes a single engine taxi to cut back on fuel consumption and Northwest even uses some solar energy for part of its ground fleet. Northwest has gone to a paperless ticket system and is testing an in-flight recycling program on its planes. Northwest does offer carbon offsets when you purchase a ticket and they are through the Nature Conservancy, who is a great environmental group. Unlike most offsets, 100% of the fee goes towards the projects (most offsets use part of the money for an administrative fee). Issues: Northwest has below average environmental reporting and does not seem to utilize any green building initiatives including LEED certified projects. Northwest does not offer any sort of organic, fair trade, or local food on its flights and has yet to seriously pursue any alternative fuel types. Lastly, the age of its fleet does present some efficiency concerns. Greenopia Verdict: Northwest has some solid green programs, but falls squarely in the middle of the pack for our analysis. |
