What We Do

Greenopia provides consumers with high quality information to help them reduce their impact on the environment through their daily purchasing decisions. Greenopia publishes extensive green business directories, product directories, and brand directories, as well as offering a growing community, news articles, blogs, and tips to help everyone eat, shop, and live green.

Our Directories

Greenopia's directories guide consumers to the businesses and products to help lead a more sustainable lifestyle. All listings are independently researched, rated, and ranked using unique sets of life cycle based and category-specific criteria, ensuring that each business and product meets precise qualifications. We never accept payment for listings.

Our Ratings

The Greenopia Leaf Award allows consumers to easily assess the overall greenness of a business or product. Four-Leaf Rated listings meet our most stringent criteria while One-Leaf Rated listings meet our minimum qualifying standards. The Greenopia Scorecard allows consumers to easily see the specific areas of greenness in the product’s or brand’s life cycle.

Our Community

Greenopia's community provides a place for people to engage in sharing their favorite listings, meeting other people, sharing their eco-interests, blogging, discussing green topics, and much more. Our newsletters provide an opportunity to stay up to date with compelling articles, press releases, exclusive opportunities, and the newest, hottest, and greenest listings.

Northwest
Category: Brand Ratings -> Airline Companies -> Northwest

      Northwest

Average Fleet Age: 18.5

Greenopia Environment Achievement:

Fuel Conservation

Alternative Fuel Types

Recycling Programs

Green Food Option

Green Building Design

Carbon Offsets

Efforts:
Although Northwest was recently purchased by Delta Airlines, since they had separate environmental initiatives and infrastructure, we thought it would be worth analyzing (plus Delta’s score will potentially become a composite of the two in the future). Northwest has the oldest fleet of any of the major companies with some sources putting the average plane age at around 18 years. Northwest utilizes a single engine taxi to cut back on fuel consumption and Northwest even uses some solar energy for part of its ground fleet. Northwest has gone to a paperless ticket system and is testing an in-flight recycling program on its planes. Northwest does offer carbon offsets when you purchase a ticket and they are through the Nature Conservancy, who is a great environmental group. Unlike most offsets, 100% of the fee goes towards the projects (most offsets use part of the money for an administrative fee).

Issues:
Northwest has below average environmental reporting and does not seem to utilize any green building initiatives including LEED certified projects. Northwest does not offer any sort of organic, fair trade, or local food on its flights and has yet to seriously pursue any alternative fuel types. Lastly, the age of its fleet does present some efficiency concerns.

Greenopia Verdict:
Northwest has some solid green programs, but falls squarely in the middle of the pack for our analysis.
