Continental Average Fleet Age: 9.6 Greenopia Environment Achievement:
|
|
Efforts: Continental is another one of the airlines who has been making a strong effort to reduce its environmental impact. Continental has one of the younger fleets on the market with an average fleet age of around 10 years. Newer planes are oftentimes more efficient with their fuel consumption and emissions. Continental installs winglets on its planes and uses several other fuel saving measures in its operations including single engine taxiing, engine washing, and ground vehicles powered by electricity (as opposed to combustion engines). Continental is one of the few airlines who has completed flights solely with biofuels and offers a carbon offset service for its passengers. The offset service is pretty good, with a variety of projects (some good, like renewable energy generation, others not-so good like reforestation). Continental also has one of the most comprehensive environmental reports. Issues: Continental has no LEED certified terminals or buildings, although it does incorporate LEED elements into its projects. Although Continental has a solid waste diversion, it is only in the testing phases of bringing recycling on board its flights. The last thing we would like to see are some green food options available on its flight. However, very few airlines offer anything of this sort, so it is not like Continental is below average in this regard. Greenopia Verdict: Continental is another top performer among the major airlines environmentally. |
