Efforts:
American publishes one of the best sustainability reports in the industry. It also has fitted many of its planes with winglets which help reduce fuel consumption and therefore emissions. American is also researching alternative fuels which can help reduce emissions and energy intensity further. Finally, American has a comprehensive recycling program on its flights.

Issues:
American’s average fleet age is on the older end of the spectrum coming it at around 15 years. American also does have any LEED certified terminals or offices. Little organic, fair trade, or local food is offered on American flights as well. American does not offer a dedicated carbon offset feature like many of its competitors. It does have an offset tool (called Be Green), but it seems to be geared more towards its frequent flier miles program.

Greenopia Verdict:
In spite of some good reporting, American Airlines falls a bit short of what other airlines are doing to be green.
