oh man, You guys messed up bigtime. Did you just pick him because of Vermont's reputation? You clearly do not know that Jim Douglas is the biggest obstacle for ALL environmental legislation. Do you realize that right now the courts just revoked permits given by the Douglas administration for sewage treatment plants because the data they were using was 7 years old? That's right, the capacity expectations for those treatments plants were based upon 7 year old data. Do you realize how woefully inadequate that would be? Do you realize the the impact to Lake Champlain? Douglas would rather hand out these permits rather than step on the toes of business. Green Governor? No way.

You guys are out of your minds! The only "environmental" accomplishment of this governor is the ability to crank out misleading press releases about the environment.

This governor VETOED legislation to address climate change. He also VETOED legislation that would have required the Entergy Corporation to clean up the nuclear waste at Vermont Yankee, Vermont's aging nuclear power plant. He does like to take credit for legislative initiatives, even after fighting them, which explains the information on his website (health care reform is in this category as well). Is Greenopia a front for some organization of polluting businesses (look at who gives money to Douglas), or did you just do no real research?

As a Vermonter, I must ask: "Are you KIDDING???" This is ridiculous. May I suggest you check your methodology? Something is seriously amiss here. Just ask someone who lives in VT. Any green initiatives have NOT come from Jim Douglas.

That Jim Douglas could be described as one of the greenest governors in the U.S. is preposterous. He is no more than a cleverly disguised servant of lobbyists and industries, a marrionette if you will. He manipulates the government from within, crippling the very agenies and organizations responsible for truly protecting our states environment. The very environment to which he claims to be so "friendly". Delve just beneath the suface of his policies and affairs and you will see the truth.

I am astounded that ANY organization would consider Jim Douglas as an environmentally friendly governor, let a alone a leader in the environmental arena. Look at what he does, not what he says he does. We had one of the top notch Agency of Natural Resources, whose staff of environmental professionals were among the best in the country. He has specifically targeted this agency by dismantling its infrastructure. For me, the final straw is his proposal to allow ATV's on environmentally fragile and conserved state lands.

Greenopia compared governor's "policies, transparency, and interest group ratings and ranked them. It was a monumental task." I don't think so. You acknowledge that you could find no ratings of Douglas by environmental groups, and that you relied on information from Douglas' own website. Shame on you. Douglas is no friend of Vermont's environment.

I live in Vermont and have worked in the environmental field for 30 years. Including Governor Douglas in a ranking of the top 10 green governors is an insult to those governors who legitimately deserve to be on such a list. Douglas belongs on a list of the top 10 most hypocritical governors. He talks a good game while behind the scenes he and his appointed thugs are working overtime to turn back the clock on the environmental progress made under previous Vermont administrations both democrat and republican. Douglas has dismantled Vermont's once well-respected environmental agency and destroyed the careers and livelihoods of dedicated environmental scientists and engineers, while adding to his staff legions of public relations flunkies whose only role appears to be to enable Douglas to claim credit for the hard work of others. Governor Douglas is an embarrassment to Vermonters who care about our environment.

Incomplete methodology The majority of info regarding Gov. Douglas must have been collected from his state website because two out of four of your data sources don't even rate him at all ! Votesmart on Jim Douglas : No ratings on for this official. No issue stance yet recorded by Jim Douglas :OnTheIssues.org.

This is from a Bizarro universe right? Let's see: - Failing to keep up with cleaning Lake Champlain - Happy to let Entergy push for an extension of VT Yankee's (deteriorating) nuclear power plant (and to take campaign money from them) - Wants to gut Act 250 which provides for responsible development reviews - Wants to kill archeological reviews of developments sites - Thinks business knows what's best for environment (because they do so well now?) I guess if you compare him to W, he is green. Good news for you - your "ranking" reveals how well you researched him and set your criteria. You probably rank SVUs as green because they have big windows that can open to cool occupants and not use A/C.

you've got to be kidding me. You should ask a few actual Vermonters about this. He's the republicanist republican in Vermont. All things are relative.

Greenwash,I say ........This rating really draws into question your methods,as Gov.Douglas has a terrible record on the environment. His efforts to clean up Lake Champlain are stalled and he most often is dragged kicking and screaming into doing anything regarding regulation.

This governor's administration is now proposing to allow ATVs on state owned land. There has been a long standing policy in Vermont that these machines are not compatible with the majority of uses people do on state land. He has chopped jobs majorly at the the agency of natural resources, cutting some of the most effective and knowledgeable people there. These are environmental credentials?

This is crazy! The guy just laid off 10% of his staff in the Agency of Natural Resources.

Name: from VT.... Date: 7/1/2009 12:32:08 PM

You have to be kidding. This governor has fought nearly every environmental initiative he's ever seen, going back throughout his 37 year career in public service. The Clean and Clear program you mention doesn't even come close to addressing the problems of Lake Champlain (its sole focus) and does nothing to address the needs of the rest of the state. He has fought hard against every clean energy program, even funding for energy efficiency, which is one of the top programs in the nation. Whenever there are state job cuts, which is one of Gov Douglas' favorite things to do, the ANR takes the biggest hits, even where positions are funded from outside. All I can guess is that if this guy is in your top 10, all the rest are so much worse.... very scary.
