Four-Leaf Rated listings meet our most stringent criteria while One-Leaf Rated listings meet our minimum qualifying standards. The Greenopia Scorecard allows consumers to easily see the specific areas of greenness in the product’s or brand’s life cycle.

Description: Governor Schwarzenegger is frequently heralded for his environmental initiatives and role in making California one of the most environmentally progressive states in the country. Governor Schwarzenegger has been fairly well received by environmental interest groups and has solid marks from the League of Conservation Voters. As of this time, Governor Schwarzenegger has not taken a political courage approved by VoteSmart which would help his constituents know where he stands on key issues. Some of the environmental initiatives that Governor Schwarzenegger has undertaken include the Low Carbon Fuel Standard, Greenhouse Gas reduction standards, Solar Roof Program, and several resource conservation programs. One statistic California is especially proud of is that its buildings are about 40% more efficient than the US average. While this is very commendable, some of this may be due to California’s more favorable climate. Governor Schwarzenegger also has the Hydrogen Highway initiative, but the overall practicality of this program is a bit suspect when you look at the full life-cycle costs of hydrogen fuel vehicles. Governor Schwarzenegger has good transparency on his main webpage and has a solid amount of useful advice for users to decrease their overall environmental footprint. As noted above, we would like to see more overall policy transparency, but at least Governor Schwarzenegger puts environmental issues front and center. Have the Citizens Responded: California is a national leader amongst emissions and energy consumption per capita. This suggests that the conservation message is getting out. California also is one of the national leaders in renewable energy consumption. To be fair, California has a good climate for renewables, but Californians should be proud that they are not wasting these resources like some other states. |
