Description: Governor Ritter, elected in 2006, has made a name for himself as one of the greenest politicians in the US. Although little interest group data exists for Governor Ritter, he is one of the few governors who has taken the VoteSmart political courage test to clearly show where he stands on the issues. What makes this even more impressive is he actually took the time to explain some of his stances rather than just marking the issues he thinks are important. Governor Ritter has been a part of a number of environmental initiatives in his home state and here are some of his accomplishments. Colorado ranks numbers 6 and 11 in solar and wind energy generation respectively. Colorado is also aggressively pursuing new sites for solar and wind energy in order to further increase its renewable energy usage. Colorado is home to several biofuel plants. Some of these biofuels are better environmentally than others, the most impressive being a biomass plant that only uses trees that have been killed by beetle infestations. Governor Ritter is also trying to bring a large number of green jobs to Colorado through his New Energy Economy program. Colorado is in the process of creating a zero energy district in Fort Collins, and has a comprehensive carbon offset program through Carbon Fund. Lastly, Governor Ritter has set numerous goals for the greening of the state government the first LEED certified capitol building and several programs to conserve resources. Governor Ritter has great transparency both on political sites and on his own government webpage. As we said above he is one of the most transparent governors that we came across. Governor Ritter also makes it very clear that the environment is a high priority issue for him. Have the Citizens Responded: Colorado fare well at a citizen level as well. Colorado uses a healthy amount of renewable resources and is well above average in emissions and energy use per capita. We would like to see more solar and geothermal energy as Colorado is fairly well suited for either of these energy types, but all things considered, the Colorado public is following their green governor. |
