Earth Celebrations was founded in 1991 by, community cultural development artist, Felicia Young, as a not-for-profit 501c3 organization in New York City, dedicated to fostering ecological awareness and reviving the arts at the center of community life. Earth Celebrations innovative environmental and arts programs include: theatrical pageants/parades, exhibitions, performances, art & ecology/puppet&costume workshops, internships, artist residencies, web-site earthcelebrations.com, and partnerships with schools, community centers, and gardens. For 15 years Earth Celebrations produced the popular Rites of Spring:Garden Pageant and Winter Pageant on the Lower East Side, which engaged over 5,000 participants annually, and led to the preservation of many of the community gardens on the Lower East Side and throughout New York City. Earth Celebrations environmental arts programs: o Address environmental issues such as: climate change, toxic waste, recycling, and the preservation of nature, parks, gardens, and a healthy urban environment. o Promote cross-cultural communication and celebrate diverse cultural traditions. o Provide environmental arts programs for youth and adults through schools, community centers, parks, and gardens. o Build alliances among gardeners, artists, residents, and local organizations to work together creatively and achieve common goals.
