Company Overview:
Costco has over 520 stores and represents about $67 billion in sales each year.

Green Efforts:
Costco has comprehensive sustainability report, making it one of the more transparent major retailers. From the start, Costco has been good about using natural or efficient lighting and has high recycling rates for its packaging. Costco also has incorporated solar panels on 14 of its stores and has worked with suppliers to reduce their packaging. All of its stores incorporate some general elements of green building design, and Costco recently opened its first LEED certified store in New Jersey. Costco has been working to stock more green products and has placed a special focus on greening the seafood that it carries. Lastly, buying in bulk also has environmental gains associated with it.

Green Issues:
Costco has not been as progressive as companies such as Wal-Mart in green building design or the products on its shelves. We were happy to see Costco improve its transparency, but it is still not at the commitment level as many other major retailers.

Greenopia Verdict:
Costco is one of the most improved major retailers from last year’s guide. We hope to see them continue to get greener in coming iterations.
