Interviews
Ashley Lowengrub and Dara Gerson, Designers of Alkemie Jewelry
      by Ayana Meade

Husband and wife jewelry design team Ashley Lowengrub and Dara Gerson have forged a one-of a kind line, out of love and 100% reclaimed metals.  After learning about the harmful social and environmental effects of mining, the two who had previously worked independently on their own successful lines using traditional metals, decided to collaborate on Alkemie—which means the art of transforming something common into something precious.

Greenopia had the opportunity to talk with the pair about their joint venture.

Greenopia:  You both had successful jewelry lines working with traditional metals.  What motivated you to transition into using reclaimed metals?

Alkemie:  After learning more about the harmful social and environmental effects of mining we knew it was important to be conscious about where the materials we used for Alkemie came from.  As we did more research we learned about three major deterrents to the traditional use of materials in the jewelry world. First, the really startling harmful effects of mining for metals and gem stones.  Next, the social issues involved such as children working in dangerous conditions to mine and mount stones.  Lastly, the environmental factors, such as toxic chemicals from mines seeping into the surrounding environments, we knew it wasn’t a trade that we could continue to support. But we both felt such a passion for designing beautiful jewelry, and that’s when Alkemie was conceived.

Grenopia:  How do you decide what designs to come up with?  How has nature influenced your designs?

Alkemie:  Many of the pieces are inspired by real-world encounters---birds, sea urchins, acorns, leaves, shells, and seahorses, and by exploring the world through texture, fingertips, child-like wonder and amazement.

Greenopia:  How is using reclaimed metals better for the environment?

Alkemie:  When you used reclaimed metals from a variety of sources you are not contributing to fresh mining which is extremely polluting, displaces communities, contaminates drinking water, hurts workers and destroys pristine environments.

Greenopia:  What types of sustainability practices have you incorporated into your home life?

Alkemie:  Sustainability is an integral part of the way that we choose to live.  We drive a hybrid car.  We try to buy local eco-friendly products whenever possible.  We grow vegetables in our own organic garden.  We re-use and recycle whenever possible.  We love vintage clothing and furniture.  Use canvas totes for shopping.  Limit plastic consumption by using re-usable stainless steel water bottles and so on....

Greenopia:  What’s the best part about working together as a husband and wife team?  How is your cooperation reflected in the jewelry?

Alkemie:  Expressing creativity with your soul mate is a beautiful element that enriches our marriage.  The cooperation is my feminine touch blended with Ashley's edge.  This becomes the feminine edge that is present in Alkemie's Designs!
