It’s been a long winter, and your skin might resemble something out of a 1980s TV mini-series where alien reptiles land on earth to “take away our water.” But not to worry. Sure, Summer is just around the corner, but we’ve got the goods to smooth out all the rough edges. We applied ourselves to the latest, greatest, greenest body moisturizers, and we’ve come up with some of the best solutions to keep you hydrated.
Hydrating Body Lotion by Origins
Origins claims “you are what your skin eats” (and…ew), but it is a good reason to keep things pure. This product blends essential oils of organic clove, rose, lavender, patchouli and more. It contains mostly organic ingredients and is non-toxic. It has a pleasant scent – hello, lavender – and keeps your skin quenched. But it is a little pricey, retailing at $35. So you might have better luck with some of our more frugal suggestions.
Blood Orange and Vanilla Body Milk from John Masters Organic
This fantastic moisturizer retails for $18, but it is worth every penny. A light moisture that absorbs quickly, it will keep your skin feeling moisturized. So there’s not an immediate need to re-moisturize: a little goes a long way. And best of all, it smells like a creamsicle! Made with certified organic ingredients, the blood orange detoxifies and promotes collagen, while milk thistle extracts provide an antioxidant to smooth and nourish your skin.
J.R. Watkins Shea Butter Body Cream
This body moisture is thick, creamy, heavy – and smells like deliciously sweet, sweet lemon meringue pie. (The only downside is that you will immediately crave pie moments upon application.) It also gets props for being affordable in these tough times, retailing at $8.99. It is made from 97.5% natural ingredients, and it is paraben and phthalate free. Because it is so thick, it takes a bit of time to absorb. So it is best for your driest parts, (my heels are calling it right now).
Nature Girl Rosemary & Mint Shea Butter Body Balm
This high-end organic moisture retails at $42, but it does pay up. It offers up a deep, thick moisture that lasts. And it has a wonderfully light, mint-meets-pine smell that stays with you. It is made with wild-crafted African shea butter and various organic oils, shea butter, lavender water and more.
Ready to keep it green and cheap? Check out this recipe for a great homemade sugar scrub. Sure, the ingredients may cost a bit up front, but you will be able to make the scrub again and again. Take one part white cane sugar (Apparently, white cane sugar works best), one part organic avocado oil. Add small amounts of organic aloe vera gel. Add a few drops of your favorite organic essential oils. Combine the ingredients in a bowl. Using your hands, massage the scrub into your skin. Let it sit for three to four minutes, then rinse. Try to avoid any hungry bees or bears during application.
